A Pokémon booster pack is a sealed foil pack of randomly assorted cards from one Pokémon Trading Card Game set. Every pack has the same structure, common cards up front and at least one Rare at the back, but which cards you get is random, so the valuable cards, called hits, turn up only in some packs.

What's in a Pokémon booster pack?

A current English Pokémon booster pack, from the Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution series, holds 10 game cards in a fixed order, then a Basic Energy and a code card for Pokémon TCG Live:

  1. 4 Commons. The cheapest cards in the set, marked with a circle.
  2. 3 Uncommons. Marked with a diamond.
  3. 2 Reverse Holos. Regular cards with a foil background. The second slot is where an Illustration Rare or Special Illustration Rare replaces the reverse holo.
  4. 1 Rare or better. A holo Rare most of the time, sometimes a Double Rare (a regular Pokémon ex) or an Ultra Rare (a full-art card).
  5. Basic Energy and code card. Not counted in the 10. The code card unlocks a digital pack in Pokémon TCG Live.

On TCGplayer's count of more than 4,000 Pitch Black packs, about 1 pack in 5 had a Double Rare, 1 in 9 an Illustration Rare, 1 in 12 an Ultra Rare and 1 in 80 a Special Illustration Rare. Special sets can differ: 30th Celebration packs hold five cards and always end with a Pikachu rare.

How much are Pokémon packs?

A Pokémon pack has a suggested retail price of $4.49, and the same rate holds for booster bundles and booster boxes ($26.94 for six, $161.64 for 36). What you actually pay depends on the set and the store. Packs of regular sets sit a little above MSRP; packs of special sets, which have no booster box, sell for far more.

Which products Pokémon packs come in

Single booster packs

Loose packs sit behind the counter or in display boxes; sleeved boosters come in a cardboard sleeve that makes tampering harder. Blisters hold two or three packs, often with a promo card.

Booster Bundle: 6 packs

Just six packs in a small box, at the same $4.49 a pack as a booster box. A good size for trying a new set.

Elite Trainer Box: 9 packs

Nine packs plus a promo card, 65 sleeves, 40 Energy cards, dice, a coin, dividers and a code card. The Pokémon Center version has 11 packs and two promos for $59.99.

Booster box: 36 packs

The cheapest way to buy many packs of one main set, but special sets do not get one. See our Pokémon booster box guide for prices and expected hits per box.

Collections and tins

Premium collections, mini tins and Build & Battle Boxes mix packs with promos, decks or accessories. They cost more per pack, so buy them for the extras.

Which Pokémon packs are best to open now?

For the most hits per pack, 30th Celebration: TCGplayer found a hit in about every three packs. For one big chase card, a small set such as Phantasmal Flames (Mega Charizard X ex) or Pitch Black (Mega Darkrai ex). For variety, Ascended Heroes, the largest English set. Our full ranking is in the best Pokémon packs to buy, and every set is in all Pokémon sets in order.

Where to buy Pokémon booster packs

How to spot a resealed Pokémon pack

  1. Check both crimped ends. Factory seals have even, sharp ridges across the full width. Flattened, smooth, wavy or uneven crimps are a warning sign.
  2. Look and feel for glue. Shiny or sticky lines, hardened edges, or foil that lifts at the seam suggest the pack was opened and closed again.
  3. Check the back seam and the wrapper. Resealers tidy the front for photos; wrinkles, tears or a loose back seam give them away.
  4. Be wary of loose packs from strangers. Some sellers weigh or feel packs to pick out hits, so a pack can be sealed and still searched. Card Codex warns never to buy loose Japanese packs for this reason. Sealed boxes, blisters and sleeved boosters from a store are safer.

Online packs vs booster packs

Booster packs give you 10 cards from one set, and Pokémon does not publish the odds, so pull rates are estimates from card sites that open thousands of packs. A Godpack pack is different: each holds one real Pokémon card, a Near Mint raw card or a PSA or CGC slab, from a pool that spans many sets, and shows its full odds before you open.

No pack is a sure thing

Most booster packs hold no big hit, and opening packs until one card appears usually costs more than buying that card. The same goes for Godpack: every pack is set to a 100% expected return, so the average card across the pool is worth the pack price, but any single pack can be worth more or less than you paid, and most pulls land in the lower tiers of the odds table.

Real packs are for people 18 or older, or the age of majority where you live if higher. Open them for collecting and fun, not to make money.
